John Goodman wasn't supposed to be home that weekend. The New York man was supposed to be on a trip in Pennsylvania. But after he was in a serious car crash that totaled his vehicle, he postponed his vacation.
And he's so grateful he did.

When Goodman got home after the accident, he saw someone asleep in his backyard. Originally thinking it was a homeless person, he walked closer to wake them up. But when the mysterious figure peaked her head out, Goodman was floored.
"I saw her hair and I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s a little girl,'” he said.
She was only 12 years old, and she had run away after having some trouble at school. Apparently, she had slept in his yard for one night.
After he brought her inside his home and gave her food and shoes, he saw a Facebook post about a missing girl.
It matched her description, and apparently her family had been searching for her all night.

Goodman got the chance to meet the girl's grandfather, who was overwhelmed with gratitude that he took care of her.
Goodman couldn't imagine not doing so.
"I love the kids," Goodman said. "That made me feel like that could be one of mine—one of my nieces, one of my little girls. And I can’t have that."
