Mississippi mom Kristy Irby was driving with her 2-year-old daughter when a deer ran in front of her car without warning. After she swerved, her car slid into a creek. Before long, the car began filling with water. It became clear that it was sinking. And it became clear that they were trapped.
After all, the car had electrical windows. So Irby couldn't roll them down. She couldn't break them. She put her husband on speaker phone so she could say what might have been her final goodbye. But instead of panicking, she decided to do something else in the midst of the chaos. She began to pray. And then, something truly incredible happened.
"As soon as I started praying, the windows started rolling down and the water started gushing in," Irby said.
Though she and her toddler were both able to escape from the car, they were still trapped in the creek, hanging on dear life to a tree. But little did they know, a bystander had called 911 for help. And help came in the form of Officer Shane Gibson.
He caught sight of the little girl's pink bow, and immediately dove in the water, rescuing them both. While the town has hailed the officer the hero, Gibson pointed to Irby as the hero.
"She grabbed it. I don’t know how she did that," Gibson said. "She’s holding onto this tree with one arm, and she’s got the baby in the other arm."
Meanwhile, Irby maintained that the real hero was God.
"I just had to put my faith in God that he was going save us and not take me from my babies yet," she said.
