“Every night around dinnertime, the same 800 number kept showing up on my phone, which could only mean one thing: a bill collector. As a single parent working two jobs, not only was my bank account completely depleted but my faith was dwindling as well.
“As much as I tried not to, I was angry with God. Where was He when my marriage fell to pieces? How am I supposed to raise three kids on my own?
“The next day when that dreaded 800 number called again, I almost welcomed it. Why not blow off steam where I could? I answered with a sharp ‘Hello.’
“As the man from the collection agency reminded me that I was three payments behind, I bit back tears and shook with anger. ‘Listen, I know this is your job, but I’m on my own with three kids. We’re lucky to keep food on the table. I can’t even afford toys for Christmas, so please stop calling.’ After I hung up, I broke down and sobbed.
“A week later I got a strange holiday card in the mail. Folded inside was my statement from this collection company along with a Toys ‘R’ Us gift card. I was shocked when I saw that the balance on the bill was zero. In the bottom-right corner, the card said simply, ‘God bless!’
“I blinked in disbelief until I remembered how God always puts the right people in our path—even those we try to run from can be blessings. I smiled as I read the words again and thought, Yes, He does.”
