After a single-engine plane her husband was flying crash-landed just feet away from the frozen Missouri river, Susannah Ethington couldn’t stop the nightmares, until she handed over all her fear
KANSAS CITY, MO.—The moment Susannah realized her husband had lost control of the plane, she knew there was nothing she could do. Nose down, the plane started to spin out of control. “I just began pleading to God, saying, ‘We have 6 children, please help us!’” Susannah recalls. “And as we were going down, toward the river…I felt scared but strangely at peace, it was the weirdest feeling.”
The plane landed 5 feet from the edge of the bank of the icy Missouri River, and Susannah and her husband, Edward, walked away unharmed. But Susannah’s fears didn’t subside.
Susannah and Edward
“A few days later I started having these nightmares that I was going to crash, but I realized, even when I’ve checked everything and done everything, there’s nothing I can do to stop myself from crashing,” Susannah remembers. So she decided next time in her dream, she would just let herself crash, she’d be calm relaxed and crash. “And that’s what I did!”
“We do everything we can, and when we can do no more, we leave it up to God,” Susannah says now. “He’s trusted me with more days here. I don’t want to mess it up by always being afraid!”
