People have a lot to say about Justin Bieber, but there is no denying that the formerly troubled pop star is making strides to turn over a new leaf, from his music to his personal relationships. But one of the most striking parts of his fresh start is the renewal of his relationship with God.
As you can probably guess, the story of Bieber's Baptism is far from a typical one. But the surprising circumstances and location of his Christian revitalization makes it all the more powerful and compelling.
Pastor Carl Lentz of Hillsong NYC had been longtime friends with the teen idol. And according to Lentz, on the night that Bieber decided he would be baptized, he was looking in the mirror with a deep sense of loss.
"I want to know Jesus," Bieber said, crying.
The two of them prayed together, and Bieber begged Lentz to baptize him. The pastor agreed to schedule a time, but Bieber didn't want to wait another second.
"No, I want to do it now," he said.
So Lentz went to the Manhattan Hotel and tried to access a pool for the baptism, as the church sometimes does. But the paparazzi were around waiting for them. So the pastor called his friend Tyson Chandler, a former New York Knicks basketball player.
Lentz said, "I’m in a jam here. I have JB with me, he wants to get baptized."
And Chandler simply said, "Done. Easy."
Although the pool was not available, Chandler's custom-made tub was open. So Bieber was baptized there in the tub water, while sobbing against his pastor's chest. He needed to be declared someone new in order to make it through the night. And that's just what happened.
