The August issue of Simple Grace features Kate Grosmaire's powerful story of forgiving and fighting for the man who murdered her daughter. Here, she shares the moment she questioned everything during the justice process
The day of the meeting, Kate prayed for strength. And when Conor walked in, she did something that surprised them both…she embraced him in a hug. “I did it to convey my forgiveness and sympathy,” she says. “I was immensely sad for him and I wanted him to know we believed in his redemption."
When the meeting began, Kate poured her heart out about losing Ann, and the devastation it had caused the family. Then it was Conor’s turn to recount what had happened on that fateful day…but nothing could have prepared Kate for his words.
“I shot Ann…she was on her knees screaming, 'No!'”
Kate couldn’t breathe. Pain and fury sliced through her like a hot knife. “It felt like she’d just died all over again,” she says. “I didn’t know if Conor deserved my forgiveness after all.”
In tears, Kate walked out into the hallway, and took a few deep breaths. “My heart and mind calmed when I realized that God had already helped Andy and me bear the unbearable,” she says. “I’d learned forgiveness isn’t an event, it’s a lifestyle. The decision to forgive had to be made again and again with every new challenge. I reminded myself: I’ve already forgiven this.”
