Simple Grace caught up with Kay Warren about how she keeps her relationship with God strong. Here she shares the secret to getting even closer:
The lesson that has taken Kay the longest to learn is that to serve God best, she must take time to nurture herself physically, emotionally and spiritually. “Rick can’t control my spiritual life. He can’t determine how much I seek God. How much I pray. How much my heart is turned toward surrender—no one can control that but me,” she explains. “And so if I’m going to grow in intimacy with God and in my knowledge of Him and His ways, it’s completely and totally and utterly up to me to do that.”
Kay has realized that she needs emotional and physical self-care as well. “We’ve all got our battle scars,” Kay states, “so it’s up to me to seek counseling, to read books, to get advice from people so that I grow emotionally. And physically, nobody controls how much I put in my mouth, how much I sleep, how much I move or how much I am out taking in the fresh air.” By caring for herself, Kay says she builds tools that let her ride life’s rough waves that will inevitably come her way.
