At the beginning of the school year, Josette Duran was surprised when her son asked for two lunches. But the second lunch wasn’t for him.
“No Mom, it’s for this little boy at school,” her son told her. “He sits by himself and all he eats is a fruit cup.”
The principal called Duran into his office after the little boy’s mother found out that Duran had been feeding her son.
The boy’s mother offered Duran money, telling her that it wasn’t much, but she had just gotten a job again.
She refused the money.
Upon discovering that the little boy’s mother had lost her job and couldn’t afford her son’s cafeteria lunches, Duran immediately understood how that woman felt.
In an emotional Facebook video, she shared that she and her son were once homeless, living out of their car and using public bathrooms to clean themselves.
When the volleyball team Duran coaches raised more than $400 to pay her back, Duran took the money and gave it to the school to cover all lunch debts.
"Now no one in that school owes any lunch money to anybody, and everybody can eat."
