You've heard about miracle babies. But what about a miracle mom?
Melanie Pritchard suffered cardiac arrest while preparing to give birth to her child Gabriella. With no heart rate, she was declared clinically dead with her unborn child still inside of her belly. The baby's heart rate began to plummet.
Doctors rushed her to the operating room, and miraculously, they were able to deliver the baby alive. Melanie's husband Doug went to go see their daughter, not knowing if his wife was dead or alive. As he was beside himself in tears, the nurses asked their baby's name.
"Gabriella," Doug said. " The heroine of God."
In the meantime, doctors were finally able to get a faint heartbeat out of Melanie after spending nearly an hour and a half trying to resuscitate her.
Doctors believed Melanie suffered amniotic fluid embolism, which is usually fatal. Plus, during the emergency C-section, an artery had accidentally been cut. So even though they stabilized her, she needed to undergo more emergency surgeries. The staff encouraged Doug to say his goodbyes.
Doug said to her, "If you have any fight left, then fight. Despite my hopes, promise me that you will follow your guardian angel wherever he leads you. Where he leads you will be where God needs you."
While being treated, Melanie's eyes suddenly opened. But doctors were still concerned she would not survive so they showed her a photo of her newborn child. She began to cry and twist around, prompting doctors to sedate her.
Amazingly, within 24 hours of the final operation, Melanie was weaned off of medications and breathing on her own. Both mother and child made a complete recovery.
"It has been almost four years, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank the Lord for allowing me to survive something very few live to talk about," she said.
