At first, this mom thought a long wait in Target was an inconvenience. But she soon realized it was the exact opposite.
After a stressful day at work, Sarah Owen Bigler was ready to leave the store as soon as possible, especially since she had her kids with her and her husband was sick. But while waiting in the checkout, Bigler watched an elderly woman in front of her count out coins one by one to pay. Bigler realized she would be there a while. In a Facebook post, Bigler admitted she was frustrated at first. But then she watched the employee's reaction to the woman—one of patience and kindness.
Bigler wrote, "I watched him help her count her change, ever so tenderly taking it from her shaking hands. I listened to him repeatedly saying 'yes, mam' to her."
Then she noticed someone else was watching the scene unfold, her young daughter Eloise.
She wrote, "I realized I hadn't been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger; furthermore, I realized that I too needed a refresher on this lesson."
When the woman was done paying, the employee, named Ishmael, thanked Bigler for her patience. She thanked him in return for teaching them patience—and kindness—with his treatment of the elderly woman.
