The February issue of Simple Grace features an exclusive interview with Olympic gymnast Simone Biles. Here, she shares the experience that deepened her trust in God:
Born to a mother addicted to drugs and alcohol, Simone was 3 years old when she and her three siblings were placed in foster care. Once up for adoption, her maternal grandfather, Ron, and his wife, Nellie, stepped in. “It wasn’t an easy decision for them,” Simone says. “They were done raising their two boys, and now suddenly here we were.”
“My grandma—now my mom—says she worried about whether she could truly give us the care we needed,” explains Simone. But that week, Nellie ended up talking to a woman she’d never met who’d told her how she had adopted a child with extreme physical and emotional needs…and how that child had become God’s gift to her. The stranger told Nellie, “The Lord doesn’t make any mistakes—and He never gives you more than you can handle.”
Now Simone believes God sent that woman as a guardian angel to tell Nellie everything would be okay—and that God Himself was placing them in Nellie’s care. “Every now and then, I think about how my life might’ve been different if they hadn’t taken us in,” shares Simone.
“Would I have ever gotten into gymnastics? Probably so, because I truly believe I was supposed to take this journey, which means God would have made a way. But today I’m part of a beautiful family that’s closer and more loving than any I could’ve ever chosen.” Now when Simone is confused, lost or feeling down, she remembers what the stranger told her mom all those years ago: God never makes mistakes.
