The latest issue of Simple Grace highlights The Joy of Advent by Diane M. Houdek. This 30-day Advent reading plan incorporates Scripture and the writings of Pope Francis to provide some calm in the chaos that the Christmas season can bring. Here, Diane shares some of her daily prayer practices and special holiday traditions
“Every morning I try to pray with a few of the Psalms,” she says. “Because I work with words all day, I also like to spend some of my prayer time in quiet contemplation, listening to music and knitting.”
Diane’s Nativity scene and the decorations on her Christmas tree hold very special meaning in her heart. “My Christmas tree and Nativity scene both hold so many memories of family,” she says. “My mom and grandma made many of the ornaments for my tree. My parents gave me my own Nativity set when I set up my first apartment and then added to it each year for St. Nicholas and/or Christmas. Now that they’re gone, it’s a special way to remember them during the holidays.”
Diane also loves the Christmas season for the opportunity to drink her favorite beverage: eggnog.
She adds with a laugh, “I only let myself have it during December!”
