The odds seemed stacked against baby Nika.
In 2014, the little girl from Haiti had a serious brain condition that caused excess fluid to accumulate in her head. As if that wasn't bad enough, she had a neglectful mother who was more ashamed about her baby's appearance than concerned about getting her well.
Have you ever seen a more PERFECT little face?! Hint.... I think you know there's only one right answer to this question! 😉Praise God in advance for the incredible future ahead for this precious treasure living at @danitaschildren #orphancare #ayiticheri #greatdestiny #missionarylife #perfection #treasure #shesvalued #BabyNika #hydranencephaly #littlewarriornika
But a young Louisiana woman named Sarah Conque, who was serving at a pediatric center where Nika was taken, stepped up in a big way. Months after meeting the child, Sarah had a gut feeling that something was seriously wrong with her. When she arrived at her home, she found the baby alone, surrounded by trash.
Sarah convinced the mother to give her to an orphanage family to give her proper care. But ultimately, Sarah took Nika under her own wing.
She was told 99 percent of babies in Nika's condition die before they turn one.
But thanks to Sarah's tender love and care--and the decision to become her legal guardian--Nika has blossomed into a happy, healthy toddler.
A year and a half ago today Nika had an NG tube. Back then, she needed one because she couldn't tolerate but a pinky sized amount of formula and she was severely malnourished.... all because her biological family wouldn't feed her. Today, she has an NG tube for very different reasons, we are preparing for gtube surgery because her abilities to eat by mouth have declined and her medical team want to make sure she is getting the nutrition she needs. The two reasons couldn't be more opposite, much like these photos. At 11mths old on the left in Haiti (08/28/14) it shows the horrific effects of gross negligence, of a precious little girl left alone. Today, at 29mths old on the right (02/28/16) it shows the result of incredible love shown by so many people. I get extremely emotional thinking of how God has completely reversed her life story and all of the details with it. She was once alone, she's now surrounded by people who value and cherish her. Once forgotten, she's now treasured beyond compare. Once invisible, she's now able to tell her story that screams how big our God is. We give HIM all of the glory for the fact that you can barely tell these two photos are of the same child. Lord, we bow down in gratitude that we are never alone, you are right there with us; for every good thing, hard thing, and every painful thing.... We trust Your plan and Your purpose... May we glorify You in all that we do. Amen! #NikaInAmerica #miracle #hydranencephaly #hydrocephalus #orphancare #love #littlewarriornika
