At 350 pounds Kim Bensen had tried every diet in the book, but it was a whisper from above that gave her the strength she needed to shed the physical—and the spiritual—weight
SHELTON, CT—“Beyond embarrassed” is how Kim Bensen, 53, describes feeling while on a scuba diving trip, when her husband and his friends had to tie a rope around her body and tow her back to shore because she was too heavy to pull herself up into the boat.
For Kim, getting stuck became a painful theme. “In restaurants [the hostess] would say follow me,” explains Kim, “and…I couldn’t necessarily follow because I couldn't fit between the tables.” But Kim not only felt trapped physically, she was being weighed down spiritually. “I knew I was a new creature in Christ, so why couldn’t I lose weight?” she says, “Why couldn’t I do this? Why couldn’t I change?”

Unable to break the cycle of heartache and failed diets, Kim says she finally surrendered to her hopelessness. “I was sitting at the kitchen table during my quiet time, and I asked myself where my finances were going, where is my heart? And the answer was: food,” she admits, with sadness in her voice. “I said, ‘You know what God, I want to love You more than I love food. But I can’t change this.’ Then as I was praying, this quiet voice said, But I can change you.”
Amazed at such a simple yet powerful answer, Kim began to focus on God’s love and it filled her like no meal could. She lost an amazing 212 pounds over two years. As she approaches the anniversary of reaching her goal weight, Kim says her life has been renewed physically and spiritually. “I feel wonderful. [With Him] I feel so free!”
