Bestselling author Ann Voskamp shares how witnessing her 18 month old sister die right in front of her led to years of pain and anxiety, until she put her trust in God and found her inner strength. Here she recalls the moment she realized the power of God's love to guide her through anything:
“At 18, I had full-blown panic attacks and was diagnosed with agoraphobia," Ann admits. "I’d try to turn to God but I struggled. I understood in my head that He loved me, but in my heart, I hadn’t experienced that love in a tangible way.”
Over time, focusing on building a family and writing became Ann’s pathway to true healing. “Pens are cheap medicine,” Ann smiles. “One day I literally began writing down 1,000 ways God loves me, and that’s when I started to migrate from the cerebral understanding of God’s love to knowing it in my heart.”
Ann says this also helped her see fear for what it really is: a fraud. “Fear makes us believe that God’s love ends somewhere,” she explains. “I was afraid that His love ended and I’d be left alone. But I realized God’s love never ends. It’s a perfect love that casts out all fear—in fact, I couldn’t feel fear when I was counting His gifts.”
