Vicki Kuyper's hilarious book, A Tale of Two Biddies, is highlighted in the February issue of Simple Grace. In this incredibly honest interview, Vicki shares how God transformed what she once thought of as her greatest failing into a beautiful reminder of His love.
“Though my son, Ryan, has grown up into an amazing young man, when he was a teenager, he was quite the handful,” Vicki explains. “During one season of his life, he repeatedly threatened to kill himself—and was particularly prone to do so when I would say ‘no’ to something he’d set his mind on. Every night, I went to bed praying that he didn’t do something impulsive. Something he could never take back.
“After that season had passed, I remember going into Ryan’s room to get something from his closet. I saw a belt tied into a kind of noose hanging from the clothes’ rod. I burst into tears, reprimanding myself, How could I have missed this before? What kind of mother am I?
“But that morning, I’d been reading in the Gospels about the woman who washed the feet of Jesus with perfume and then dried them with her hair. The disciples were in an uproar. What was she thinking? That money could have been spent to feed the poor! Jesus's response was: She did what she could. And that is what He whispered to me at that moment. I did what I could with what I had during that season of my son’s life. It was all I could do. And I believe God assured me it was enough.”
