The January issue of Simple Grace features an exclusive interview with one of America’s most beloved pastors, Bishop T.D. Jakes. Here, we share a sneak peak of the amazing spiritual journey God has taken Bishop Jakes on
“I had a tremendous battle when my mother developed Alzheimer’s and I had to move her into my house,” he shares. “Watching a woman who I thought was invincible endure the mental and physical deterioration and essentially fade away—she didn’t even recognize me most days—was so overwhelming…I thought I wouldn’t make it. I couldn’t understand why God wouldn’t lift up the burden or heal her the way that I’d prayed so fervently for.”
How did his faith survive?
“What caused me to snap out of my pain was seeing the many other wonderful things God was doing in my life,” he says. “And suddenly I began to understand that His providence and His purpose exceed my will and my desires. I was like a child who had to learn that his daddy doesn’t always give him what he wants when he wants it.” Bishop Jakes adds that doesn’t mean God doesn’t love us or that He’s not going to bless us. “God sees down the road and He understood better than I did—He was leading me to my destiny.”
