In the October issue of Simple Grace, missionary Hélène Norman shares the story of how God helped her overcome anger and bitterness to forgive the terrorist who shot her husband and daughter. Here's a sneak peek:
When Hélène was invited to visit a community where World Vision had started women-led projects she was surprised—and worried: Do these women see me as friend or foe? Would they ask me to leave the country? Instead, the women welcomed her with open arms, singing and dancing. "I was stunned," Hélène exclaims. "They have so little, but they dressed me in a beautiful new mulafa, their traditional garment, and the children gave me bracelets and rings. They told me I was one of them."
That evening, as she described the scene to her husband, Ray, Hélène wept. These beautiful women had understood her pain and showed Hélène that she was valued. "Their love and kindness opened my heart to the Holy Spirit," Hélène relates. "The Holy Spirit prompted me to forgive Ali, the man who’d shot Ray and Hannah.” And Hélène knew she must do it…face to face.
