Boston, M.A.—Julia Wise and Jeff Kaufman have made giving a cornerstone of their marriage. Since 2008, the couple has been committed to giving away at least half of their income to charity.
Julie was first motivated to give when she was just 10 years old and dropped $20 in the offering at church. At a young age, she understood that she had more than enough and wanted to help others.
"We have what we need, so it makes sense to share with people," Julia said. "We don't see what we do as extreme."
In 2013, the couple lived on just 6.25 percent of their income and used GiveWell to help them determine where to donate. They have given away $400,000 so far and are looking forward to a lifetime of giving.
