Dawn Pringle used to think she would never make a difference in this world. Until August 14, 2014. She woke up with a little spiritual "nudge" in her head.
And it said, “You go let people know that they matter.”
Pringle knew she had to make the message a reality. But she had no idea how to go about spreading this message.
"I thought that the message I was supposed to write down was ‘You are enough,' she said. "But, that spiritual nudging kept telling me that it had to be something else. It had to be 'You are important.'"
So she wrote that down on a white board, asked her cousin to write a message of his own (he chose 'You have purpose'), and the pair went to a busy Texas intersection. They held up their signs.
After they were done, the messages started pouring in, thanking her for her selfless act. She remembers receiving one Facebook message that was particularly striking.
It read, "A kid in my hometown gave his testimony in church that he had written out his suicide letter and planned on going through with it that night. But he had to run to Amarillo and saw you with a sign on the corner that said ‘You are important.’ He began to cry and told his mom everything."
Even though two years have passed, Pringle still receives messages, notes and letters from people who have said her simple sign changed their lives. Others were feeling suicidal until they saw it.
“I now understand the power of words more than I ever have,” she said.
