An ordinary date night for Carmen Mendez and her boyfriend in November 2015 became extraordinary after a homeless woman walked into the restaurant where they were dining. The woman asked for leftover food from diners, and no one offered theirs up.
In a Facebook post, Mendez wrote, "They all ignored her and threw it away. It broke my heart."
That's why Mendez, who has spent several years volunteering with the homeless, decided to give her what was left for her meal. But she decided that wasn't enough. She purchased an entirely new full meal for the woman.
Despite other diners looking on in disgust, the only thing that mattered to Mendez was the look on the lady's face after she received her food and the hug she gave in return, both of which were captured in a touching photo by Mendez's boyfriend.
Mendez wrote, "I have never felt something like this. Pure, real gratitude. The hug she gave me was like a hug I had never felt. Those tears she shed were felt deep within my heart. I held her tight and let her let it out. I wasn’t repulsed by it. I just held her. And that is a moment I will never forget."
Mendez's post about her good deed has since gone viral, with more than 250,000 likes and more than 97,000 shares.
