Simple Grace is proud to be the first to reveal the cover of the award-winning author Janie DeVos’s brand new novel The Rising of Glory Land coming in June 2018. Here, Janie shares about how writing the second installment of her GLORY LAND trilogy was a personal and life-changing experience:
"As a novelist of southern fiction who was born and raised in Miami, Florida, it was simply a matter of time before I wrote a series about Old Florida," says Janie. "I come from a long line of Floridians who have lived in different towns and cities throughout the state, and these predecessors have given me plenty of inspiration for not just one book, but for a whole series. Thus, the GLORY LAND trilogy was born."
The novel takes place at the turn of the 20th century, in a city that would be unrecognizable today, but was the cornerstone in the foundation of the glittering giant that Miami exploded into. Long before hotels and skyscrapers crowded the coastline, houses of refuge were there to provide shelter for survivors of shipwrecks, which was a common occurrence with the frequent hurricanes that battered the tropical Eden. But miles offshore was where some of the bravest early Miamians lived. Those were the ones who watched the seas from lighthouses built upon those deadly reefs, keeping their lanterns burning brightly in order to guide mariners safely on their way. They did lifesaving work, but they also lived lonely, isolated lives. Such is the case in THE RISING OF GLORY LAND, with two handsome lighthouse keepers, Paul Strickland, and Owen Perry, until one of the Stewart women comes along. Then it is a matter of what touches the keeper’s soul the deepest: the lure of the sea or the desires of a lonely heart.
"Writing about these undaunted and resilient early Floridians, from the confines of my log cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, has been a very personal and moving experience for me, and one I’ve tried to clearly impart to my readers by creating a vivid backdrop filled with some rather interesting characters," Janie continues. "Some of them may be loved, and others loathed, but no matter what the reader feels for each one of these imaginary friends and foes, my greatest hope is that they will be remembered long after the final page is turned."
