Jesuit Priest and author of the new novel The Abbey, Father James Martin told Simple Grace his secret weapons to overcoming doubt: his favorite Bible stories.
In particular, Father Martin says he finds hope and strength in the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. "One of my favorite parts of that story is that when the sisters send word to Jesus that their brother is sick, they describe him not as 'Lazarus of Bethany,' or 'Lazarus your disciple' or even 'Lazarus our brother,' but something more beautiful: 'He whom you love,'" Father Martin says. "It's a reminder of the deep and personal relationships that Jesus had with his friends." And having that love and deep relationship with Jesus is like an armor against despair.
But the most important story Father Martin turns to is that of Christ's Resurrection. "To me, the message of the Resurrection is not simply that Jesus has been raised from the dead (which is an important message!) but that nothing is impossible with God!"
