The April issue of Simple Grace features an in-depth interview with Father Martin, where he gets practical about his daily prayer practices. Here, he shares what he thinks a lot of people get wrong about Lent.
“Lent is often misunderstood,” Father Martin says. “It’s usually seen as a rather depressing time when we just ‘give things up.’ Certainly sacrifice helps us to confront bad habits, but I think Lent is much more about preparing our hearts for Jesus in a new way. So I like to suggest that rather than giving something up, do something positive. For example, just be a kinder person. I think God cares more about that than whether or not we eat chocolate!”
