First responders are true heroes. Not only do they save lives, but they also keep calm in a crisis so they can calm those around them.
That's what happened during this past holiday weekend. An SUV flipped over while exiting the highway in D'Iberville, a town on Mississippi's Gulf Coast. Five kids were ejected from the car, including 4-year-old Gabriel; the adult driver was also injured.
Passersby also got out of their cars to help, but it was the actions of firefighter Casey Lessard that has captured the attention of millions of people. He lay on the ground next to one of the kids, pulled out his cell phone, and showed the boy Happy Feet, the inspiring movie about a dancing penguin. The boy instantly calmed down. Gabriel, thankfully, is out of the hospital already. Two of his siblings are still in critical condition.
The D'Iberville fire chief told the Sun Herald that firefighters are trained to do whatever it takes to comfort kids who are involved in something traumatic.
It's ordinary gestures like these that can have such a powerful effect. Watch the video of the accident to witness Casey Lessard in action.
