Not all heroes wear capes—or are even human.
Businessman Andy Smith unexpectedly collapsed in the middle of the night after a possible stroke and heart attack. His foster dog, Gracie, sensing he was in trouble, began barking incessantly. His stepdaughter, Coral Sibley, was startled awake by the pup's noise.
Sibley said, "I told Gracie to be quiet but then she went crazy. I got up and looked in to the front room and saw my stepdad face down on the floor."
By the time she called for an ambulance, Smith had stopped breathing. Alongside her mother, she performed CPR until the medics arrived with a defibrillator to bring him back to life.
As it turned out, Smith was dead for 17 minutes. Medics predicted if it weren't for his dog, he would not have survived. When he finally woke up from a coma two weeks later, it was no surprise that he wanted to adopt Gracie for good.
"If Gracie hadn’t had been there, I would have woken up in the morning to go to work and Andy would have been dead on the floor," Sibley said. "Gracie is a hero. If it wasn’t for her Andy wouldn’t be here. She saved his life."
