Evelyn Adams and Rocky Barlett have far from a typical love story. And it has far from a typical happy ending.
Both homeless, this devoted pair lived together in the backwoods of Tampa for three years, after living under a bridge downtown.
"We survive together as one," Adams said. "That’s how we survived 22 years."
Tampa Police Officer Dan McDonald happened upon this couple when he discovered their wooded tent. But instead of writing them a ticket, McDonald decided to put forth a plan to get them back on their feet for good.
The kind-hearted cop told the lovebirds if they were married, they'd have an easier time finding approved housing. Since they wanted to get hitched, but couldn't afford a wedding, McDonald used his platform to raise awareness of the couple's challenge to the local community.
And donation after donation poured in. In a matter of months, not only could the couple afford the marriage license fee, they could also afford a bridal gown and tux, flowers, food, and a stunning location.
"It has just been a dream come true," Adams said. "No one’s ever done this for me and Rocky."
Even better--the couple has now been approved for housing and they're set to move into their own apartment with a fresh, clean slate.
"We look forward to a new life, to starting over," Barlett said. "That’s all I can say; it’s going to be a start over."
