NFL quarterback Russell Wilson was all ears at a concert (of all places!) and what he heard is changing his life and his heart
When the 26-year-old Seattle Seahawks front man began dating R&B singer Ciara last April, he thought it was just a typical budding romance. After going through a heartbreaking divorce in 2014, Wilson wanted to take things slowly, but something happened that opened his heart and helped him see this was actually a once-in-a-lifetime love story.
A few weeks into their relationship, Wilson says he was backstage at one of Ciara’s concerts when he was suddenly filled with the Holy Spirit. “I’ll never forget it: It was about 15 minutes before she went on stage," he recalls. "I was sitting in the dressing room looking at her in the mirror, and God spoke to me.”
“[God] said, ‘I need you to lead her.’ And I was like, ‘Really? Right now?’ And God goes, ‘No, I want you and need you to lead her,’” describes Wilson. “And right then I asked her, ‘What would you do if we took all that extra stuff off the table? And just did it Jesus’s way?’”
Wilson says that the "extra stuff" was God asking him to remain abstinent and minimize other earthly distractions amplified by being celebrities, so the couple could focus solely on their love for each other. "I said to her, and she completely agreed: 'Could we love each other without that?' If you can really love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody."
Since that night, the pair has been inseparable, and both have a common goal: “I knew that God had brought me into her life to bless her, and for her to bless me. She is the most beautiful woman in the world. She's the most kind person, the most engaging person... everything that I could ever want. We’re not perfect by any means…but He’s anointed both of us,” Wilson stated, laughing that it hasn’t been easy. “I know that He’s calling for us to do something miraculous, something special.”
