Pastor and bestselling author Max Lucado tells Simple Grace about what makes him anxious and how God guides him through it. Here Max shares how changes in his church caused him great anxiety and how he dealt with it:
We all know that change can be one of the biggest catalysts of anxiety, and over the past year, Oak Hills Church has seen a lot of changes…which have caused Max a few sleepless nights. But each time he begins to feel worry drawing him in, he takes refuge in the Lord.
“Our executive pastor retired and my co-pastor moved on as well, and I found myself the last man standing at our church, which amplified my already heavy responsibility,” Max shares. “I became so anxious that I couldn’t sleep, so I’d think of this beautiful passage in Psalm 91 about taking shelter beneath the wings of the Lord. I’d imagine myself tucked beneath the wings of God, and I meditate on that comforting, tender image.” Max says that he would also go into another room and listen to an audio reading of the Bible. “There’s something about hearing God’s word spoken out loud that comforts me in an extraordinary way,” he says with a smile. “It drowns out all my worrisome thoughts!”
