Summerville, S.C.— As storms rage in South Carolina, one brave pastor defied orders and waded into the floodwaters.
When Pastor Wayne H. Reeves saw a casket floating in the floodwaters, he ignored orders not to go in the water and instead waded deep into the stream of the flood to retrieve the casket.
"That's somebody's family out there," he said. "This family is already hurt and I don't want them to hurt anymore."
Irlean Thompson, a cousin of the family member whose casket Reeves rescued said Reeves was an answer to prayer.
"With the body being out there so long and the water has been rising since Sunday, we just said, 'Lord, cover him," and you know he wasn't afraid," she said of Pastor Reeves. "God sent him out there."
Reeves explained that leaving the casket floating in the water was not an option.
“This family doesn’t want to sit out on the edge of the road all night long watching their family members bob in the water out there. That’s just not who we are,” he said. “If that was my mama or my dad, I would walk through hell or high water. Today it happened to be high water.”
