In light of Touched By An Angel star, Della Reese's, recent passing, Simple Grace thought to share a touching tribute to her beautiful heart for the Lord through the eyes of her beloved friend and co-star, Roma Downey:
Roma admits that surrendering to God’s will is not always easy, and that she doesn’t always know how to respond when He calls her to a difficult situation. One such time was during a visit to a children’s hospital in Salt Lake City where Touched by an Angel had been filming. “I’d felt moved to go up there over the Christmas holiday and bring a little bit of cheer to the parents and sick children,” she recalls. But when Roma happened to walk by a room where a little one had just passed away, she wanted to back away and give the family dignity and space in the moment. But God had other plans.
Suddenly the mother of the child recognized Roma and said, “Monica! You’re here! I prayed that God would send an angel for my baby and here you are!” Monica was the name of the angel Roma played on Touched by an Angel, but she worried about misleading the grieving mother. “I’m not an angel and I didn’t want to appear to be anything I wasn’t,” says Roma. “I didn’t know what to say, so I just held her in my arms and prayed with her and tried to be a friend.”
Shaken by the experience, Roma shared what happened with her dear friend and costar, Della Reese. “When I called Della, I was upset because I felt that I shouldn’t have let the mother think I’m really Monica, and Della said, ‘If God is going use us, we have to learn to get out of the way—it’s not about us, it’s about Him. We are just His messengers,’” Roma recalls. “It reminded me of how, on set, we would close our eyes and pray, Less of me, more of You, less of me, more of You. That’s still my prayer today.”
Today we celebrate Della's beautiful life and how the Lord used her in so many loving ways.
