Sean Astin has starred in some of the most iconic movies of the past thirty years, from The Goonies to the Lord of the Rings series, but in the past several years he has emerged as the star of Christian films like Mom's Night Out.
His latest Christian movie is Woodlawn, where he plays minister Hank Erwin, an evangelical leader who brought a freshly desegregated football team together in Alabama in the 1970s. The film's emphasis on family, faith and reconciliation appealed to Astin.
"I think of this as an evangelical movie," Astin says. "They're talking about how Jesus is the way, the truth and the light, and they hold up the one finger and say this is what happens when God shows up."
As Astin has aged, his relationship with God has matured, and he's grown more confident in sharing his spirituality.
"I think I've gotten more comfortable talking about how I feel about life and the world and God," Astin explains. "I realize it's tricky for an actor to talk about faith and movies...but I'm definitely more comfortable saying the name Jesus."
We praise God for faithful actors like Sean Astin!
