Hal Steenson was on an ordinary "dollar store" run, picking up some cleaning supplies for his family. But when he got to the checkout line, he saw that someone was in his way.
It was a young teenager, and he didn't seem to see Hal. But then the young man began waving his hands excitedly.
"Mommy, I’m over here," he said.
It was clear to Hal immediately that the young man had special needs. And that the young man was shocked to see Hal standing so close, waiting in line to check out.
But then Hal said, "Hey Buddy, what’s your name?"
The young man immediately lit up with happiness at his friendly greeting.
He said, "My name is Denny and I’m shopping with my mother."
Hal said to Denny, "That’s a cool name. I wish my name was Denny, but my name is Hal."
Denny's mother slowly came around the corner, looking puzzled at their conversation.
"Be a good boy and let the man pass by," his mom said to Denny.
But Hal didn't pass by. He continued to speak to Denny for several more minutes about school, summer, bikes, and more, until Denny dashed off to look at the toys.
Denny's mom then thanked Hal for talking to her son, especially since most strangers won't even look at him. That's when Hal told her something she won't easily forget.
He said there are many red, yellow, and pink roses in "God's garden," and that Denny was a "blue rose." Though blue roses are rare, they should be appreciated for that.
"Who are you?" Denny's mom asked him, as a tear rolled down her eye.
"Oh, I’m probably just a daffodil or maybe even a dandelion," Hal said.
A beautiful flower if there ever was one!
