After both her sons were murdered, Ida Keeling’s heart shattered. But in her deep despair, she heard God whisper one word: Run. Today at 102 years old, she’s still running into His arms. Here, she tells how God a 5K race to help heal her heart:
For the next four years, Ida descended into depression and despair, but in her darkest hour, God’s hope returned in a surprising way: as a new pair of sneakers. As she ran alongside her daughter in that first 5K race, Ida’s pain and loss weighed so heavily that she feared she’d fall to her knees. Suddenly, she heard a loving voice in her heart say, Stand up! Go! Go! She recognized it as God’s voice, carrying her forward as it had through every other trial in her life.
With each step, Ida says she could feel His love chasing the despair from her heart. “I’d never run a day before that first race when I was 67,” she muses. “I thought nothing could help me out of the pain, but I found freedom from the bad memories when I ran. Running brought me back to the land of hope again.”
Through the years, tears and many miles, Ida knows one thing for certain: “God has been with me through everything,” she says. “He said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you,’ so any problem I have, I try to see Him in it. God is a beacon of hope Who always guides us home.”
