Saving coins is usually a sign of thriftiness--and while Ortha Anders likes to save, he has another reason for celebrating the one-cent coin. "Whenever I would see a penny, I would always say a prayer of thanks," the Louisiana native told KNOE.com. “It was a reminder to me to always be thankful."
Since the 1970s, Anders has collected these humble coins. "I'd break a dollar before I spend a penny," Anders told the Louisiana station. "If I was at your house and a penny was on the floor, I'd pick it up and tell you, 'If this was a quarter I'd give it back to you.'”
He kept the coins in five-pound water jugs--and had 15 jugs before he was forced to cash them in this week when his insurance company would no longer insure his stash. The total amount came to $5,136.14. Anders is putting the money toward a large, unexpected medical bill. Thank God he found so many pennies!
